The risks and threats posed to corporates by cybercrime today is significant. The sheer variety of the threat vectors combined with the intangibility of the information technology assets to be protected, and the difficulty in ascertaining when they have been compromised and quantifying the loss of asset value – all these factors play a role but nevertheless the risks and threats continue to multiply.

There is also a general lack of awareness about the laws and provisions of the Information Technology Act, as amended in 2008. For example, Clause 43 A of this Act, specifies that in case of failure to protect sensitive personal data in its control, the compensation payable by the company to an affected person can can extend upto Rs. 5 crore. How many company managements would have taken steps that will protect them from liability in this case?
